The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has partnered with over 20 eCommerce stores in the Philippines, such as Takatack, to launch the first ever Pinoy Cyber Sale, which will run from Black Friday (November 27) to Cyber Monday (November 30).

Pinoy Cyber Sale

In the United States, Black Friday is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving where brick-and-mortar retailers kick-off the all important holiday sales season with massive discounts on some of their stock. As Black Friday has become increasingly popular, Cyber Monday was created so that eCommerce sites could also further boost their sales.

The Pinoy Cyber Sale thus represents an attempt to recreate this sales boost over a much longer four-day period by offering consumers irresistible discounts and other promos. Yet while some of its participating retailers allow consumers to pay via cash on delivery (COD), including Takatack, the vast majority still require a credit card to purchase from their e-store.

It’s also considerably easier to instantly pay online than to scramble for cash whenever the delivery person happens to show up at your door with your selection of products in hand. Unfortunately, very few Filipinos own a credit card, with most estimates placing it between 1 and 5% of the total population.

For the rest of the Philippines, there is PayMaya. Launched in August this year, PayMaya is a first-of-its-kind digital payments mobile app and prepaid card that was built for emerging markets like the Philippines in mind. In addition to the physical card that you can use to pay at brick-and-mortar stores wherever Visa is accepted, PayMaya is a breakthrough service that comes with an instant virtual Visa.

To avail of the instant virtual Visa, all you need to do is download the PayMaya app, which is available on both the App Store and Google Store, and sign up with your mobile number. The mobile app gives you your own instant virtual Visa, which functions like a prepaid card - you can top it up with money and then shop online. No application forms necessary, you just need to register through the PayMaya app.

PayMaya thus represents access to the digital economy for Filipinos who would otherwise have not had it.

“With PayMaya, millions of Filipinos can now participate in the first ever Pinoy Cyber Sale and receive all the benefits that come with it. They can get enormous discounts on everything from the latest gadget to their favorite clothes, all from the comfort of their own home. They can skip the traffic and the long lines at the mall,” said Raymund Villanueva, marketing head for PayMaya Since PayMaya extends financial inclusion to millions of Filipinos, Villanueva believes the digital payments product can provide an additional boost to the Pinoy Cyber Sale.

“The goal of the Pinoy Cyber Sale is really two-fold. On a basic level, you want to generate more sales through offering valuable discounts. But you also want to create a lot of noise and buzz to show the potential of eCommerce in the Philippines. With PayMaya as an aid, I really believe we can announce the arrival of the Philippine eCommerce scene with a historically large Pinoy Cyber Sale,” he said. As a special Pinoy Cyber Sale offering, Takatack is giving 20% discount on the products listed in their marketplace site.

PayMaya is the product of Smart eMoney, Inc., the leader and pioneer in digital financial services. Takatack is fueled by Voyager Innovations. Both Smart eMoney and Voyager Innovations are the digital innovation units of PLDT and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) (PR)
