Recently, HP released three new Deskjet series printers and one of this is the HP Deskjet GT 5820 which has an all-in-one feature. The printer is classified for small business or SOHO (small office home office) and now have been equipped with a refillable ink tank system that offers a cheaper printing cost. HP Deskjet GT 5820 also has a built-in wireless networking and a 1200x1200dpi scanner and a couple number of other features.

It also highlighted that the original HP ink bottles provide low cost & high yields to provide high volume printing and its easier now to replenish the ink without getting dirty hands. So what are we waiting for? Let's proceed to the review below:

What's inside the box?

The box contains the following:
  • 1 x HP Deskjet GT 5820 All-In-One Printer
  • 1 x Plug cable
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x Software & Driver CD
  • 1 x Black ink bottle (70ml)
  • 3 x Colored (Cyan, Magenta & Yellow) ink bottles (70ml)
  • 1 x Black ink catridge
  • 1 x Colored ink cartridge
  • User manuals & instructions

Build & Design

The printer's build is impressive as it is made of a hard plastic which makes it feel very sturdy and premiumly built. The overall body is matte textured and black color. The printer is a bit bigger to other all-in-one printers out there but it is just okay considering that the ink tank is non-removable and is part of the body of the printer. The overall design of the printer is well engineered by HP, despite its size they still made the look of the printer to be beautiful and nice to look at.
Side view of the printer, it it intelligently designed by HP

The scanner can support up to an A4 (see the top part with the scanner glass) size which you can see in the picture above and the front bottom opens when you need to replace the ink cartridges or something went wrong.

The back part has the ports for the power plug and the USB cable to connect to the PC or Laptop. The cables are pretty long enough to use.

The back slides up and acts as the holder for the paper when you will be printing, sometimes I find it a bit annoying as it slides down when you pushed it a little.

The ink tank of the HP Deskjet is now upgraded so its easier to refill the ink. The inktank is designed to have a safety seal and a cap so that even the printer is shakes, the ink will not spill out. The tank also have a sticker instruction so you can easily follow it when you forgot how to refill. With this upgraded system, the printers can print up to 5,000 pages for black ink and up to 8,000 pages for the colored ink. The ink bottles costs Php375 divided by 8,000 equals 4.6 centavos per page cost and 6,000 equals to 6 centavos per page cost.

The printer also comes with an LCD display as status indicator and several buttons that helps to activate certain functions like turning on the WiFi for mobile printing, colorerd & black photocopying buttons, cancelling button, information button, etc.

The ink cartridge can be removed via sliding out the side front door of the printer and a second door to automatically align the cartridges to the center so you can easily remove it. So far its easy and fast to setup.

Performance & Quality

As for the performance, the printer prints fast and efficient. Th text quality is good to read after printing when using the original ink. The printing speed of black is 8ppm (pages per minute), colored on ISO mode is 5ppm, and Draft mode is 16ppm. These speeds are perfectly respectable for an all-in-one printer like this. The image quality when using the original ink produces vivid colors when printed to a photo paper. Connecting to the WiFi network takes a few seconds for mobile printing, but nonetheless its very easy to use.

Verdict
The HP Deskjet GT 5820 All-In-One Printer is a bit expensive but genuinely a good value for money in the long term of use (Printer cost around 8.7k - 10.5k depending on the store). The black & colored 70ml ink bottles aren't that expensive either (SRP: Php375 each), rather it is same price as the regular ink cartridge but has more ink to give for printing considering also the 6 centavos per page cost. The printer is best for people or offices who print regularly and at the same time want to save money in the long run from buying expensive inks.

Pros
  • Super low cost per page of printing
  • Spill free refill system
  • Wireless printing capability
  • Copy & scan features
  • Refill the ink tank anytime & the only emptying color
  • Fast and easy setup

  • The expandable paper tray may easily be broken when not correctly used
  • A bit expensive printer
