ASUS has already released the much awaited Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the Zenfone 2 (ZE550ML/ZE551ML) and they released the needed file to upgrade it manually (no OTA update yet). So how to do it? Check the step by step instructions below:

ASUS Zenfone 2 Android 6 Marshmallow Upgrade

How to update the ASUS Zenfone 2?
This upgrade guide came from the ASUS website.
  1. Download and move the firmware zip file (UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.134-user.zip) in your device's internal storage. Download the file copy via ASUS website here.
  2. Move all important apps to the internal storage as APP2SD will not be supported by Android Marshmallow. To be safe, back-up all your files.
  3. Your Zenfone 2 will show a "System Update File Detected" in the notifications, tap it and select the correct update package. Unplug the USB cable if its charging or connected to the PC ro avoid problems.
  4. Make sure your battery is at least 60% or above as there may be corruption file problems if the phone suddenly died while updating.
  5. Tap the OK button once your ready to start the update.
  6. The smartphone will reboot into the recovery mode and will start updating the system files in your device. You can leave it while upgrading and please do not try to interrupt the process like REBOOTING or sudden TURN OFF.
  7. The phone will restart itself once it is done with the upgrade, just wait for a few moments as it will optimize all of the apps and may take time (depends on the number of apps installed) before you can use it.
