Ubuntu 14.10 : Utopic Unicorn Beta 1
Three years ago, it was predicted that by 2014, Ubuntu will be running Mir and UnityNext (8). With the release of Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Beta 1, it is shown that it retained X Windows and Unity 7. Based on the new upgrade, there are no big changes in Ubuntu 14.10  compared to the previous version - even the desktop has a close resemblance.

  • LibreOffice productivity suite, version 4.3.0.4
  • Firefox browser
  • Thunderbird e-mail client
  • Brasero disk bburner version 3.10.0
  • Rythmbox music mnager and player, version 3.0.3

The following are available for installation from the Ubuntu Software Centre:
  • Inkscape vector graphics editor, version 0.48.5
  • GIMP bitmap graphics editor, version 2.8

Mozilla's Firefox Version 31.0 still remains the default browser in Ubuntu 14.10 but Canonical includes its own Ubuntu Browser - "It's a simplified browser developed as an Ubuntu for Phones core app and designed for gesture-based operation."

Release Date

September 25 - release of Ubuntu 14.10 second beta
October 23 - final release
End of April 2015 - rumored date of release of Ubuntu 15.04
